There are topics that are repeatedly the subject of research. To make it easier for you to access them, we have compiled guides that provide tips for effective research.
What sources and collections does the State Archives offer?
What tools are available?
Are there other institutions that can help?
You will find the answers in the following guides for researching specific topics. The list is constantly being expanded.
The search for one's own roots is becoming increasingly popular. Questions such as “Where do I actually come from?” or “Who were my ancestors and how did they live?” arouse our curiosity. The science that deals with this is called “genealogy” or “family research” or “ancestry research.” The search for one's own origins is exciting and varied, but it can also be time-consuming and require a lot of patience. This is because the answers to the many individual questions must be pieced together bit by bit from various sources.

After the end of the war, the military governments placed assets acquired illegally during the Nazi era under supervision. Various authorities, which were consolidated in the State Office for Restitution in 1949, researched financial administration documents in order to return illegally seized assets to their rightful owners.
Bremen has a centuries-old tradition as a trading and port city. Its proximity to both the North Sea and the Weser River led to lively contacts and trade relations with other cities and countries, as well as trading partners around the world. Many documents from private companies and files from the city and state of Bremen document this commercial activity. This guide focuses primarily on sources relating to maritime history, trade via waterways, the shipbuilding industry, and research into seafarers.
